Why do courts give multiple death sentences?

John Wayne Gacy, when convicted was given 21 consecutive life sentences and 12 death sentences. This is an extreme case, but others sometimes get 2 and 3 death sentences. Why? There has to be some convoluted logic behind it. But a person can only die once, as far as I know. So...what's the point?
