Are they detours and road closures between North Carolina and Knoxville, TN on I 40 west?

My father traveled I 40 east last week (late October 2009) and experienced detours between North Carolina and Knoxville, TN. He asked me to find out if I 40 west is also detoured or closed. Does anyone know if it's detoured? Does anyone know of a good website for me to find out road travel information like this in the future? Thanks!
