Should I get teaching experience prior to becoming a school librarian?

I know only 9 states require that you have teaching experience. I have also heard stories of librarians being demoted because they were certified teachers and the district needed to fill a spot. What are the pros/cons of getting certified to teach prior to the MLS??? Thanks a bunch.
