Is it necessary to put sunblock before applying self tanning lotion?

The sun is back and, as I do not tan easily, I thought I might give the sun a hand by applying self tan lotion. I put it once a month ago without applying sunblock lotion and it felt great. However, I am wondering if it is prudent to avoid putting sunblock before. What would be best?
