Well, firstly a lot of people think that a dog's stool should be a lot firmer than is really normal. My vet says the consistency of toothpaste is actually what you want to see. If the stool is otherwise OK (no blood or mucus), I would not worry at all. If there is blood or mucus in the stool, you may want to talk to your vet about the possibility of a food sensitivity that may be causing colitis (irritation in the bowel).
